Hillsdale is in Hillsdale County (of which it is the county seat), and in the Central Region.

Hillsdale is located west of Hudson on State Hwy 34.

Hillsdale was first settled in 1834 by Jeremiah Arnold, who traveled here from De Peyster, New York. The land was officially platted a year later. The settlement was named after the county for the rolling "hills and dales" of the overlaying countryside northwest of Baw Beese Lake.

Today Hillsdale's economy includes a significant amount of auto manufacturing and small business. Hillsdale is also the home of Hillsdale College, the first coeducational parochial college in the state, established in 1844.
