The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 658, an increase of 75 since 1990.

Pellston was platted in 1882 by William H. Pells, who was the first to purchase the land, later selling it to settlers and also building a general store and a hotel. The village was incorporated in 1907.

Pellston has one of Northern Michigans fastest growing regional airports, with commuter flights departing daily for destinations connecting to larger airports.
