Spring Lake began when Canadian Captain Benjamin Hopkins constructed a mill here on the Grand River waterway to Lake Michigan. Originally called Hopkins Mill, the name was later changed to Spring Lake when the Grand Haven & Milwaukee Railroad built a station in the area. It incorporated as a village in 1869.

Today, the lake remains the towns most popular attraction, with tourism as its main industry.
