Sturgis is located in St. Joseph County south of Kalamazoo between Coldwater and the Indiana state line along US Highway 12 near the Prairie River and Klinger Lake.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 10,297, an increase of 167 since 1990.

Sturgis was named after Judge John Sturgis who moved there from Monroe in 1828 and built a log cabin. The City was organized in 1895.

Today, Sturgis is the biggest town in the county and remains an economically strong community with successful businesses including: plastics injection molding, auto-parts manufacturing, tool and die, hospital dietary products, metal fabrication.
