Paul Bunyan Trail

Search Brainerd Minnesota

Outdoor recreation in Minnesota's Lakes Region features 100 miles of the Paul Bunyan Trail to explore (57 miles now paved); the trail's pathway follows the original 1893 railroad line built by Burlington Northern; the line was abandoned in 1983. It is now among the longest paved "Rails to Trails" routes in the nation. This new Trail will ultimately link 16 communities between its source in Brainerd/Baxter and its terminus at Lake Bemidji State Park on the north. The Trail is non-motorized, except for snowmobiles; uses will include bicycling, hiking, and in-line skating. The Paul Bunyan Trail is fully accessible for persons with disabilities. The route will pass along the shoreline of 21 lakes and scenic wetlands, crossing bridges over rivers and streams, and showcases area pine forests, wildflowers, and wildlife. Trail users will find convenient lodging, dining, and support services available, with vehicle parking available in each community
