Noted for its large maze of waterways, Voyageurs National Park encompasses 219,000 acres, of which 84,000 acres of lakes form part of a natural highway that stretches from Lake Superior to Lake of the Woods. Voyageurs is one of the last refuges in the continental United States for the Eastern timber wolf. Park naturalists here conduct guided canoe trips, beaver pond walks, nature walks and evening programs. The National Park Service also sponsors guided boat tours to various points in the park. There are several hiking trails within the park, trailheads of which can only be reached by rental boat or resort taxi. Reservations are recommended for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
