Shaded by large cedar trees, Sappington Cemetery is the resting place of several Arrow Rock citizens prominent during the past century, including two Missouri governors - Gov. Meredith Miles Marmaduke, a Santa Fe trader, and Missouri's Confederate governor, Claiborne F. Jackson. (1860-1862). During the Civil War, when Missouri had two governors, Jackson established a pro-south government in exile in Texas. Jackson was married at various times to three daughters of Arrow Rock's Dr. John Sappington, who also is buried in this historic cemetery. Dr. Sappington was a pioneer in the use of quinine to treat malaria.
