Carthage is located in Jasper County, of which it is the county seat, just east of Joplin along Highway 71 on the banks of the Spring River near the Kansas state line. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 11,360, an increase of 613 since 1990. Carthage is part of the Joplin, Missouri metro area.
