Patee House was one of the finest hotels west of the Mississippi River
when it was opened in 1858. It was also the headquarters for the Pony Express
. The museum contains the recreated Hannibal
and St Joseph Railroad and Pony Express offices, a woodburning locomotive and mail car of the 1860s, a street with life-szie models of St. Joseph buildings from the early 1900s, Pony Express items and antique transportation and communication equipment.
Also on the site is the Jesse James Home.
