Located in the city's historic district on Fifth and Seventh Avenues, this museum's exhibits emphasize American art from the 19th century to the present, including works by Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, Charles Peale, John Sargent and James McNeill Whistler.

The museum also has English Georgian silver, collections of baskets from American Indian cultures, and 18th- and 19th-century Japanese woodblock prints. Traveling exhibits and an extensive art history library complement the museum's outstanding permanent collections.

Guided tours of the museum are offered Tuesday-Friday; groups of 10 or more are asked to make prior reservations. Open Tuesday through Sunday (library closed Sunday); closed major holidays. Admission is free to the public.
