Hermosillo was founded in 1700 for the resettlement of native Pima and is now the multi-industry capital of the Sonora state.
Located in the middle of the great Desierto Sonorense, Hermosillo gets very hot in summer; the rest of the year it's quite pleasant. It is the seat of the state university and benefits from that institution's cultural activities.
A business center for the state of Sonora, Hermosillo is largely modern, but some lovely plazas and parks recall more graceful postcolonial past.
