Search Cuernavaca

From the colonial era, stands the Palacio de Cortes (Palace of Cortes), now one of Mexico's finest museums. The oldest remaining non-religious building in Mexico. It was constructed in 1533 by Hernan Cortez and today The museum's grounds contain some interesting examples of pre-Columbian stone carvings, among them the well-known Piedra del Legarto (Lizard Rock.) In fact, the building is said to be situated on the site of an Indian temple, from the ruins of which the building materials were obtained. The interior contains 19 rooms full of artifacts dating from pre-Columbian to colonial times. One of the most important attractions of the museum is a series of murals on the second floor, painted in 1930 by perhaps Mexico's greatest artist/muralist, Diego Rivera.
