San Luis Potosi was founded in 1583 as a Franciscan Mission. Since that time it has been known as a mining center, a seat of government-in-exile and hotbed of revolutionaries. Today its main importance is as a regional capital and center of industrie, including brewing, textiles and metal foundries. Located on a wind-blown plain, San Luis Potos has fine buildings, congenial pedestrian areas, expansive plazas, museums, markets, cafes and a general air of elegance.
