Today, via modern toll roads that eliminate the tortuous 300 curves of the former approach, this enchanting colonial town can be reached from Mexico City in approximately two hours. The trip takes you through spectacular mountains and fields before a sea of whitewashed homes with red-tile roofs and the filigree spires of Santa Prisca Parish Church suddenly appear over the last crest of the journey. While a steady trickle of foreign visitors tackle the town's steep cobblestone streets, Taxco's mainstay is the manufacture of silver. Silver shops line the main plaza and all the streets leading to it.
