Situated just south of Cuernavaca, Xochicalco is one of the country's most interesting and richest archaeological sites in all Mexico, and is especially noted for its Building of the Plumed Serpent. Xochicalco not only has the distinction of being the oldest known fortress in Middle America, but is also a very important religious center.
The name Xochicalco means "Place of Flowers", although at present time, the hilltops are arid.
