Chocowinity is located in Beaufort County between Greenville and Aurora along Hwy 33 near Washington and Chocowinity Bay on the Pamlico River. Name derives from an Indian term for 'fish from many waters'. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 641, an increase of 17 since 1990.
