Broughton Hospital is the largest of the four psychiatric hospitals operated by the State of North Carolina within the Department of Health and Human Services under the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services. The Hospital serves the 37 westernmost counties in the State, which have a population of over two million, or about 35% of the State?s total population. Services are rendered through direct admission or through several area mental health programs in the hospital?s catchment area. Patients are admitted by judicial commitment or on a voluntary basis. The hospital no longer offers outpatient services. The area mental health programs strategically located throughout the 37 counties provide outpatient services. Today the hospital serves approximately 4000 patients per year with an average cost per day of $427. It employs approximately 1300 employees and has a 63 million-dollar annual operating budget.
