This is a 16,000-acre nesting and feeding refuge for migratory waterfowl, pheasants, sharp-tailed grouse, partridges and white-tailed deer. A bird list is available at the headquarters identifying 250 species of birds found on the Refuge.
Visitors may walk into other parts of the Refuge during the summer months. All Refuge waters are open to non-motorized boating and canoeing during the same time that fishing is permitted. Rest rooms, picnic tables, and grills are available to the general public.
The 5.5 mile tour road and the entrance road to the picnic area are the only roads open for public travel into interior portions of the refuge. The route is a good place to see some of the varied wildlife especially during the early morning hours and evening. The tour route is closed during the water fowl season, but may be reopened during the winter months.
