Fessenden is located in the Lakes and Gardens Region of North Dakota in Wells County about 80 miles northeast of Bismarck and just a few miles south of the James River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 561, a decrease of 94 since 1990.
An interesting day trip from town is the Ft. Totten State Historic Site located about 30 miles to the northeast. Devils Lake is just beyond the site.
Golfers are invited to shoot a round of golf at Fessenden Golf Club, a 9-hole facility measuring 2,700 yards with a par of 35.
