The city is named for the Mandan Indian tribe who were known as the friendliest group along the Missouri. A fort, named in honor of the tribe and located about 40 miles north of the city, was erected to house Lewis & Clark through the winter of 1804-05.

Outdoor recreation in the vicinity includes Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park just south of town and just south of town and [crossrsp] about 30 miles.
