The town of Turtle Lake is located in central North Dakota in McLean County about 15 miles east of Lake Sakakawea and 50 miles north of Bismarck.
The town is surrounded by outdoor recreational opportunities. Other than the big lake, a half-dozen pothole lakes are within minutes to the east and north and attracts large populations of waterfowl and hunters. Audubon National Wildlife Refuge is located on the big lake's southeastern shores and Lake Sakakawea State Park lies about 40 miles west of town.
