Crookston is located in Cherry County just northwest of Valentine off of US Hwy 20, between Cody and Springview, near the South Dakota State line and the Niobrara River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 91, a decrease of 8 since 1990.
Crookston was named for W.T. Crook, yardmaster for the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad being built through Cherry County.
