Hayes Center is located in Hayes County (of which it is the county seat), between Trenton and Wallace along Hwy 25.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 218, a decrease of 41 since 1990.

Hayes Center, became the county seat at a special election on Jan. 10, 1885.

Hayes Center was known as the Wind-Mill City as each family had their own wind-mill for their water supply, there was also a public wind-mill and tank that was located in the middle of main street, where people watered their livestock. But today wind-mills are a thing of the past, as even most farmers use electric pumps to get their water supply.

The first white men in this area were hunters, such as Doctor W. F. Carver, "Buffalo Bill" Cody.

Today, a popular attraction to the area is the Duke Alexis recreation ground, which contains approximately 140 acres, including a 100 acre lake, and well stocked with fish.

Hayes Center today is purely an agricultural and stock raising community.
