Scattered through the northwest quadrant of the state, Nebraska National Forest encompasses over 350,000 acres. There are also units of the forest in South Dakota.

In the Sandhills Region near Halsey is the Bessey Division, which contains one of the world's largest hand-planted forests. Since 1902, more than 20,000 acres of Nebraska's rolling sand hills have been planted with a variety of evergreens.
