Originally part of Londonderry, it included Windham, and portions of Manchester, Salem and Hudson. The town was named from the original Derry, Ireland, a Gaelic word Doire meaning oak woods. Derry is the boyhood home of Commander Alan B. Shepard.

The area along West Running Brook north of Island Pond Road is thought to be the original location of the first Scotch-Irish settlement in Derry, originally called “Nutfield”.
