Capulin is in Union County within the Northeast New Mexico region. Capulin is located between Raton and Clayton along Highway 87 near the Cimarron River and the Colorado state line.
Capulin Volcano is a popular attraction. The volcano has almost a perfect cinder cone, and rises more than 1200 feet above the surrounding High Plains of northeastern New Mexico. The volcano is long extinct, while today the forested slopes provide habitat for mule deer, wild turkey, black bear and many other wildlife species. A 2-mile paved road spiraling to the volcano rim makes Capulin Volcano one of the most accessible volcanoes in the world.
