The forest comprises scattered mountain ranges rising from the desert east and south of Albuquerque and stretching west to Arizona. The forest's 1,630,221 acres encompass four wildness areas: Sandia, Manzano, Apache Kid and The Withington. Recreational opportunities include camping, fishing and hiking. The rugged Canadian River Canyon west of Roy provides another type of beauty within Kiowa National Grassland. The forest also administers Black Kettle National Grassland, in neighboring western Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle. Camping and fishing center on the grassland's five lakes. Hunting is available in season, and there is skiing at Sandia Peak ski Area.
