The Pueblo of San Juan was declared as the first Spanish capital city in the New Mexico Territory by Don Juan de Oate in 1598. San Juan Pueblo is the largest of the Tewa speaking Pueblos. Popay from San Juan led the Pueblo Revolt in 1680, which drove the Spanish back into Mexico. This pueblo is best known for its detail carved red pottery.
