The San Juan Pueblo is the largest and northernmost of the six Tewa-speaking Pueblos. In 1589 Juan de Onate named this pueblo San Juan de Los Caballeros for the friendly Tewa Indians. Approximately 700 inhabitants of San Juan Pueblo, headquarters for the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Council, maintain farms and produce red pottery, beadwork and embroidery.
