Lake Tahoe sits 6,223 feet above sea level. With a surface area of 193 square miles, it is the largest body of water at this great altitude, and is the largest lake holding so much pure water. Near its north center, the lake reaches its greatest depth of 1,645 feet. Lake Tahoe is 21.6 miles in length. It is as long as the English Channel is wide, and with the width of Tahoe being half as wide as San Franciso Bay.
