The most significant national waterway built in the United States, the Erie Canal was started July 4, 1817 near Rome, New York. It was finished in 1847. Today the remains of this canal are part of the Erie Canal Park. The Change Bridge was used for horses and mules that towed the boats, to pass over the main canal. It ended in 1917.
