Metropolitan Hospital Center (MHC), founded in 1875, is a full-service, acute care hospital that emphasizes primary care medicine and utilizes the latest advances in medical science. In October 1998, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) renewed Metropolitan's accreditation.
The hospital recently opened two off-site clinics, enhancing their role as a provider of culturally sensitive medical care to the diverse neighborhoods of northern Manhattan. For New Yorkers suffering from asthma or diabetes, Metropolitan provides comprehensive care and education. Keeping abreast of changes in medical practice, MHC emphasizes outpatient treatment and ambulatory surgery, and has added staff to meet the resulting demand.
Metropolitan has been affiliated with New York Medical College since 1875, and is a designated university hospital.
