Rhinebeck is located in Dutchess County across the Hudson River from Kingston between Red Hook and Stattsburg along Highway 9 near Mills State Park in the Southern Region of the state. Rhinebeck is part of the Dutchess County, New York metro area.

It was named after the river of Europe, and "beck" for landholder Henry Beekman. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt began and ended four campaigns by speaking from the porch of the Beekman Arms hotel here.
