Ironton is located in southeastern Ohio in Lawrence County (of which it is the county seat) on the banks of the Ohio River about 100 miles south-southeast of Columbus and about 90 miles southwest of Marietta. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 12,724, a decrease of 27 since 1990.

The town is on the southern fringes of Wayne National Forest which provides ample opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.

Ironton is the home for the Lawrence County Museum.
