Norton is located in northeastern Ohio in southern Summit County about 35 miles south of Cleveland and 5 miles southwest of Akron on the banks of the on the banks of the [tuscariv]. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 12,077, an increase of 600 since 1990. Norton Township was formed in the spring of 1818 and named after landowner Birdseye Norton. Early Norton consisted of seven hamlets: Hametown, Johnson's Corners, Loyal Oak, New Portage, Norton Center, Sherman and Western Star. Early settlers came from New England followed closely by Germans immigrants. Recreation is close at hand in the form of the [portalk], [portagsp] and the Nimisila Reservoir all within minutes east of town. Loyal Oak Golf Course is a public facility offering 3 sets of 9's that one can mix and match into 3 separate 18-hole courses. Barberton Brookside Country Club, a mature course built in 1921, is also a public facility offering 18 holes of golf. CODE left
