Piqua is located in western Ohio Miami County 6o miles west of Columbusalong along [i75] on the banks of the [greatmri]. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 19,810, a decrease of 802 since 1990.

The name of the town is a result of a local native Shawnee tribe tale. The story involves a time at the annual feast and thanksgiving (no capital "t" at the time). The tribal members were all seated around a large fire, which, after having burned down to embers, a great puff of smoke was observed in the ashes. "Suddenly, a full formed man sprang up from the remains of the fire and the tribe exclaimed in astonishment 'Otaht-he-wagh-Pe-Qua.', translated 'He has come out of the ashes' And from that time, that place was called Piqua."

Today, the area is home to the Piqua Country Club which was designed by legendary golf course achitect Donald Ross in 1896. The private facility invites members of other clubs around the country to play their 18-hole, 6,800-yard course. CODE left
