Butler County

Butler county is located in the Southwest Region of the state, on the Indiana state line and calls Hamilton its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 333,486, an increase of 42,007 over the 1990 census.

The county, named for Gen. Richard Butler of Revolutionary War fame, was formed in 1803, the year of Ohio's statehood, out of parts of Hamilton and Ross counties. In 1808 Preble county, to the north, was established shrinking Butler county's land area.

Israel Ludlow is largely responsible for bringing the county seat to Hamilton by ceding a large tract of land; which was to be used for public buildings, church and cemetary and a commons area in front of the town for public uses such as boat-yards etc., and by donating $200 toward the construction of the courthouse.
