Huron county is located in north central Ohio and calls Norwalk its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 60,513, an increase of 4,275 over the 1990 census.
The county was first formed in 1809 and consisted of 500,000 acres at the western end of the Connecticut Western Reserve--also known as "The Firelands". As was customary of the early days of the state's influx of immigrants, large counties, such as Huron, often gave up large chunks of land when the population was sufficient to support a smaller county. At the last account, Huron county had contributed acreage to Erie, Sandusky, Ottawa and Ashland counties.
