Mercer County

Mercer county is located in northwestern Ohio on the Indiana border and calls Celina its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 41,017, an increase of 1,574 over the 1990 census.

The most obvious feature of the county is Grand Lake St. Marys in the eastern part of the county. In addition, the St. Marys River flows through the northern and eastion sections while the Wabash River meanders through the west and south.

History buffs will want to check out the Ft. Recovery State Memorial in the southwest part of the county. Following a devastating defeat of U.S. Gen. Arthur St. Clair's troops by the Miami Indians near Ft. Jefferson in late 1791, Gen. "Mad" Anthony Wayne pledged to "recover" this site on the Wabash River. An important victory at Ft. Recovery shortly after its completion in 1794 led to Gen. Wayne's success at the Battle of Fallen Timbers.
