Spavinaw is located in northeastern Oklahoma in Mayes County on the western shores of Spavinaw Lake along SR 20 north of the Cherokee Turnpike (U.S. Highway 412).
The town is the birthplace of Major League Baseball Hall-of-Famer Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees. Mantle's family moved to Commerce when he was three years old.
