Tonkawa

Tonkawa is located in northern Oklahoma in Kay County 12 miles west of Ponca City along U.S. Highways 177/60 and 77 on the banks of the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River. The name is taken from the Tonkawa tribe and means "they all stand together."

Local attractions include the Tonkawa Tribal Museum, the Tonkawa Historical Museum and the A.D. Buck Museum of Science & History.

For those desiring a post-high school education, the town is home to Northern Oklahoma College, one of Oklahoma's community colleges.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 2,943, a decrease of 184 since 1990.
