Beckham county is located in southwestern Oklahoma on the Texas state line. The county seat is Sayre. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 19,799, an increase of 987 over the 1990 census.

The North Fork of the Red River enters the county from Texas in an easterly direction turning first south then southeasterly after passing Sayre.

A portion of historic Route 66 passes through the county roughly paralleling Interstate 40. The National Route 66 Museum is located in Elk City in the northeast portion of the county.

Other historic sites throughout the county include the Beckham County Courthouse in Satre, the Casa Grande Hotel and the Edwards Archeological Site near Carter.
