Loyalists first settled the area in 1792. By 1860, the town's harbor had been enlarged and the railroad arrived. It became an important trade port for lumber and agricultural products. Much of the town's original architecture remains intact. Special events include September's Port Hope Fall Fair, operating since 1831. It includes arts and crafts, livestock and horse shows, and a car show. The Salmon Festival runs from mid-September through mid-October. Many fishing derbies are held throughout the year. Thousands of visitors arrive in the spring to watch rainbow trout make their way upstream to spawn in the Ganaraska River, and the scene is repeated in the fall with Lake Ontario salmon.
