Thousand Islands

Search Gananoque Ontario

The area contains more than 1,700 hundred islands, but a French explorer first used the term 'Thousand Islands,' and the name persisted. Some of these islands in the Saint Lawrence River are no bigger than a rock, but most of them are large anough for a stone mansion or Colonial house. Many have historical markers commemorating the French and Indian War and the War of 1812. The best way to visit the islands is by boat tour which can be picked up in Gananoque, Kingston, or Rockport.
