Alvord Desert

Search Visit Oregon

Steens Mountain juts dramatically from the Alvord Desert as a result of geologic uplift that occurred between 16 and 23 million years ago. Jagged outcroppings and sheer cliffs illustrate the dramatic force of wind and water through time. The precipitous mile drop in elevation results in an extremely dry climate. The area is virtually unpopulated.

In summer, its cracked, sun-baked surface is smooth enough to drive across.
