The town of Bayocean was developed in the early years of the 20th century on the spit dividing Tillamook Bay from the Pacific Ocean. Founder, T.B. Potter, claimed it would be the "Queen of Oregon Resorts". After the construction of the jetties at the mouth of the river, erosion began to eat away at the beach. The result was disastrous and the entire development, streets, houses, and other buildings, eventually were overwhelmed by the ocean. The spit is now uninhabited.
