This community is one of the state's leading centers of commerce, culture and education. Oregon State University is the source of much of the city's cultural and intellectual wealth, while farming, high-technology and lumber contribute to the material wealth. The Hatfield Marine Science Center (part of OSU) is located to the west in Newport. Originally named Marysville, Corvallis was renamed by Joseph C. Avery in 1853 to avoid confusion with Marysville, California. Established in 1845, Corvallis has a variety of notable structures in its historic district.
