Discovered in 1853 by a wandering prospector, this breathtaking blue lake is one of the deepest in the world. High atop Mount Mazama,
Crater Lake makes a fascinating day trip from the SW corner of Oregon.
Crater Lake is the only national park in Oregon.
The eruption of Mount Mazama left a deep layer of ash that can be seen today in many places where it has been revealed by erosion. The eruption, about 7000 years ago, was many times more forceful than the eruption of Mount St Helens.
Wizard Island, a large cinder cone rising 760 feet above the lake, and The Phantom Ship, a smaller island, are the result of volcanic activity since the collapse of the caldera.
