Mt Angel is located in
Marion County, between
Salem and
Woodburn along
Interstate 5, exit 271. This small community is also located near Butte Creek to the east.
Founded in 1880 as a German community, Mt Angel attracted Benedictine monks from Switzerland who built Mount Angel Abbey on a hilltop overlooking the present town. Late September, the town hosts the Mt Angel Oktoberfest, featuring German music, food, and dancing. It is the largest folk festival in the Northwest. Biking is a favorite sport due to the diverse terrain and lack of traffic. Crops that you will see include hops, filbert orchards, grass seed, Christmas trees, berries and pumpkins. There are also many ornamental plant nurseries and wineries in the surrounding area.
