Reed, a pioneer Portland businessman, Reed College began classes shortly before World War I, and rapidly gained a reputation for high quality and innovative education. Its students, also known as "Reedies," also have reputations for leftish political views and unusual lifestyles. The college consistently ranks among the most demanding liberal arts colleges in America.
